What is caffeine? ~ A naturally occurring substance found in the leaves, seeds, fruits, and some plants including tea leaves, kola nuts, and various herbal supplements such as guarana and mate.
 

What products contain caffeine?
Coffee, tea, soft drinks, cocoa beverages, chocolate products, dietary supplements, and some over-the-counter drugs. The amount of caffeine in products varies depending on the serving size, type of product, and preparation method.

How does the body react to caffeine?
It acts as a mild stimulant to the central nervous system. Also slightly increases water loss through urination. Caffeine can increase slightly the amount of calcium lost through the digestive and urinary tracts.

Does moderate caffeine consumption have any beneficial effects?
Moderate consumption of caffeine can increase feelings of alertness, reduce fatigue and drowsiness and temporarily improve mental alertness. For some people, caffeine can actually enhance physical performance.

What is moderate caffeine consumption?
Moderate caffeine consumption is considered to be about 200-300 milligrams daily; about 2-3 cups of coffee, 4-8 cups of brewed hot tea, or 6-13 glasses of iced tea.

What is an acceptable level for pregnant women?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises pregnant women to consume caffeine in moderation. Pregnant women should always consult with their physician before considering use of any kind of stimulant.

What are the health risks?
There hasn't been any scientific evidence linking moderate caffeine intake to any health risks, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, fibrocystic breast disease, osteoporosis, or birth defects. However, excessive amounts (more than 600mg or about 6 cups of coffee a day) may cause nervousness, insomnia, headaches and stomach irritation in some people.

There are some instances where caffeine has been implicated in problems such as infertility, miscarriage, and impaired fetal growth. Also, those people who have polycystic kidney disease should be aware that caffeine intake could speed up the formation of kidney cysts which can lead to the onset of end stage renal disease or kidney failure.

If you have any medical conditions such as high blood pressure, gastritis, ulcers, or stomach problems you should consult with your physician regarding your caffeine consumption.

What happens when caffeine is eliminated from your diet?
Cutting out regular caffeine consumption abruptly may cause symptoms such as headaches, restlessness and irritability. These effects are temporary, usually lasting only a few days, and often can be avoided if caffeine intake is decreased gradually over the course of several days.

What are alternatives to caffeinated beverages?
Look for non-caffeinated soft drinks like ginger ale, decaffeinated coffee or teas, juices, sparkling water and milk.

How can I tell how much caffeine is in a beverage?
Food companies are not required to put the caffeine content on labels. However, there is a movement lead by the CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest) to mandate caffeine content as part of nutrition labeling. Listed below are some common beverages and their relative caffeine content.
