The key to reaping the health benefits of
red wine is moderate consumption. Drinking one glass a day for women and up
to two glasses a day for men is reported to decrease the risk of heart
disease, cancer and stroke. Excessive drinking, however, doesn't produce the
same benefits. The
compounds found in red wine that are responsible for its heath benefits are
antioxidants. Red wines contain several antioxidants beneficial to good
health. Different antioxidants have different functions, but the key feature
of all these antioxidants appears to be one of protection and prevention
against disease. |

Red wine is rich in a class of antioxidant compounds known as
polyphenols, which can also be found in teas, chocolate, and fruit.
These compounds are involved in the quality of the wine because they
influence the color, bitterness, astringency, and chemical stability.
Polyphenols have been associated with numerous cardiovascular benefits: they
reduce blood clots, relax blood vessels, and promote healthy cholesterol
metabolism. |
